Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura
While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Here's Your Chance To Help Rep. Steve Cohen Change The NSA's Secret Court

24340_lgRepresentative Steve Cohen wants the National Security Agency's secret court to be composed of judges who care more about privacy, and he's crowdsourcing expertise to help craft his bill. The FISA Court Accountability Act would mandate public disclosure of court decisions on NSA monitoring and require any judge appointed to oversee mass surveillance be approved by both the Supreme Court and Congress.

LG G2 to include ringtones from the Vienna Boys' Choir... yes, really

LG G2 to include music from the Vienna Boys' Choir say what

LG isn't shy about its love of classical music, having once struck a deal with Ennio Morricone to put his tunes on the company's phones. However, we'll still admit to being caught off-guard by its next collaboration: when the G2 is officially revealed on August 7th, it will include the dulcet sounds of the Vienna Boys' Choir. The Android flagship will ship with nine ringtones and five alerts sung by the youth group, along with four musical chimes. Beautiful devices need beautiful music, LG argues. Whether or not that's really true, you won't have to wait long to hear the end result. LG will post free music on the G2's teaser site on August 1st, including a choral version of its standard ringtone.

Why There's No 1960s Jetsons Art in Tomorrow's Big Animation Auction

Why There's No 1960s Jetsons Art in Tomorrow's Big Animation Auction

On Wednesday there's an enormous animation art auction in L.A. that includes some gorgeous pop culture history. It will include original animation cels from Fleischer Studios, concept art from Disney legend Mary Blair, and an original production drawing from Winsor McCay's classic 1914 film Gertie the Dinosaur. There's even some 1970s and 1980s Jetsons art that should pique the interest of any retrofuture fan. But there's one thing noticeably absent among the Jetsons pieces: any production cels from the 1962-63 iteration of the show—which was its first and only season until the 1985 reboot. But how can that be?

Samsung Galaxy NX camera priced in the UK

Galaxy NX

Android-powered mirrorless camera to sell for £1299.99 with kit lens

The first UK pricing information for Samsung's Galaxy NX Android-powered mirrorless camera has started to emerge, with British camera retailers Jessops and Wex Photographic both listing the device with a hefty £1299.99 price tag. That money gets you the Galaxy NX body — complete with 20.3MP sensor, 4.8-inch HD display and 4G LTE connectivity — and an 18-55mm OIS kit lens. That's a significant step up from last year's Galaxy Camera, which sold for around £350, but it's not entirely unexpected considering this is a professional-quality camera.

Jessops lists the Galaxy NX as available today for home delivery, while Wex's listing is pre-order only. There's still no word on U.S. pricing at this point, but if you want to take a closer look at the Galaxy NX, you can do so in our hands-on feature from the camera's London launch event.

Today's contest will run through midnight tonight, Pacific time. We'll pick a winner tomorrow morning and contact him or her by e-mail. (And we're getting ready to pick yesterday's winner, so stay tuned.)

Good luck!

Zagat gets a new look on both the web and your smartphone

Zagat

Get the very best restaurants and nightspots right at your fingertips with the all new Zagat

It's been a while since Google did anything with the Zagat franchise they purchased back in 2011, but if you're a fan of the crowd-sourced restaurant rating application genre, you'll likely love what they've done with it. First off, everything is now 100-percent free, and a whole lot of people love free. Mostly though, it's the new modern look and feel they've created in their Android and iOS apps and the website.

Bright, cheery and card-based, it still ties in to services like Google+ and Google Maps to keep you informed about the best places to get your grub on. With curated lists like Restaurants with the Best Food in Washington, D.C. (Obelisk in DuPont Circle has the best Italian west of Roma -- no lie) you'll have access to trusted opinions and ratings.

Zagat still only serves a handful of cities (Austin, Boston, Chicago, LA, NYC, Philly, San Francisco and DC) but if you're a local or plan on traveling, you should give this one a spin. Your stomach will thank you.
