Leaked Android Music app images and hands-on review

Android Music player
This morning, an updated version of the stock Android Music app was leaked along with a new version of Android Market. The new Music app, which is labeled 'version 3', is similar to the leaked build from December, but it has received a ton of polish -- and indeed, it looks almost ready for prime time.

If you don't have Android 2.3 -- or don't want to root your phone to install the leaked Music app -- take a look through our gallery, and then read on for our initial hands-on impressions.

Google Reader deathwatch day one: Final warnings and Feedly and Flipboard frustrations

Life without Google Reader, Day One: Issues with Flipboard and Feedly frustrate users

Google Reader is gone now. Dead. Killed. Taken from us. If you go to the website that once housed all your feeds, all you'll find is a grim warning to export them now, because even their memory will be purged from the universe on July 15. You've been warned. Google's burying Reader deep and salting the earth.

But even those of us who've tried to move on aren't having the easiest time of it. Both Flipboard and Feedly, two popular Reader alternatives, have experienced problems today, frustrating many users, both new and old.

While Flipboard had told its users that they would still have access to their Google Reader feeds after the shutdown, TechCrunch is reporting that this isn't the case. Several users have complained that their Google Reader content is no longer available inside Flipboard, with just the message "No Content" seen where Reader material used to be. However, some users appear to have their feeds at least partially restored.

Feedly, a popular destination for former Google Reader users, had some trouble with its mobile apps this morning. When logging in to the service through a mobile app for the first time, Feedly attempts to connect to Google Reader in order to migrate your feeds. However, with the shutdown, Feedly encounters problem when it does this, leading to an error that tells the user that Feedly is over capacity. The current version of Feedly's mobile apps is 16.0.522, and Feedly says that this issue is fixed in version 16.1, which has already been submitted to Apple for approval.

Aside from these issues, however, the transition seems to be well under way. No major problems have been reported outside of these two. Many apps, both new and updated, are ready to support the new services that have appeared to fill the void Google Reader leaves behind, including Reeder for iPhone, which was updated just this morning. While we have lost Google Reader, the good news for everyone is there are so many choices for where to go now.

If you've found your new newsreader home, make sure you're subscribed - resubscribe - to iMore's RSS feed so we can keep you updated on all the Apple news you care about.

Left 4 Dead 2 mutates past Linux beta, adds more mod tools

DNP Left 4 Dead 2 mutates beyond Linux beta, adds more mod tools

Left 4 Dead 2 is the latest game in Valve's catalog to clamber out of the Steam for Linux beta. Unlike last week's Half-Life 2 news however, the extra something coming along for the ride isn't VR headset support -- it's a powerful suite of customization tools. The Extended Mutation System (EMS) gives the already robust modding community additional options for crafting one-off episodes and game type variants. For a glimpse of what EMS enables, play a round of "Holdout." This new multi-map mode introduces buildable items and the concept of resources to the co-op zombie-slaying calamity. What's more, Valve said it will add the most popular EMS creations to the official servers. Maybe with this, the world can finally witness our vision of the zombie apocalypse. Yeah, it involves marmosets.

Samsung sells 20 million Galaxy S 4s according to Korean Media

Samsung Galaxy S 4 review

So, JK Shin hasn't emerged from Samsung's HQ declaring that his company has sold 20 million Galaxy S 4s, but the day (and week) is still young. Korea's news media is quoting the CEO as saying that Samsung's flagship Jay-Z player / handset has seen its sales double from the 10 million that was announced at the tail-end of May. Given that we're but a few days away from the company's next earnings estimates, we'll probably find out for certain soon enough.

Nike's Got the Balls To Try and Revolutionize Soccer Again

Nike's Got the Balls To Try and Revolutionize Soccer Again

After the design of Adidas' soccer ball at the 2006 World Cup was found to actually be unstable and unpredictable at higher speeds, Nike has capitalized on the company's mistake to secure a stronger foothold in the world's most-watched sport. And its latest creation, a ball called the Incyte, has already been adopted by leagues around the world, including the Barclays Premier League in England, and the Serie A in Italy.

So what makes the ball worth $150? Its most obvious improvement is a new outer design. Nike is still eschewing the traditional hexagon checkerboard pattern for an improved version of its RaDaR—or Rapid Decision and Response—design that makes the ball even easier to spot down field. The Incyte's also made up of five unique layers which are promised to give a player better control, including a micro-textured elastic outer layer that's claimed to improve shot accuracy.

It all sounds pretty neat, but all that matters is how players feel about it, and whether they think it improves their game, or serves as a handy scapegoat to a bad match. [Nike via Werd]

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

opera 11.10
The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera's built-in email client -- as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail -- such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

A Simple Adapter Turns Your Binoculars Into a Smartphone Zoom Lens

A Simple Adapter Turns Your Binoculars Into a Smartphone Zoom Lens

Camera-equipped smartphones aren't quite the perfect replacement for a digital camera just yet. They lack manual controls, use tiny sensors, and their simple lenses lack the ability to zoom. (And no, digital zoom doesn't count.) But if you've already got yourself a powerful set of binoculars, this simple adapter will turn them into a powerful telephoto lens for your phone, as long as you don't mind some unwieldy bulk.

The flexible adapter works with various full-sized binoculars—so opera lovers, you're out of luck. And while designed for the iPhone 5, an included adapter lets it play nice with the iPhone 4 and 4S. At just $18 it's a cheap way to give your phone some impressive zoom capabilities, but only if you don't factor in the hundreds of dollars spent on a nice set of binoculars, and the strange looks you'll get whenever you pull this out. Bangstyle Seeks To Establish Itself As Go-To Image Platform For Hairstyling Industry

-1When Bangstyle, the image-based site devoted to hair styling, came onto the scene in 2011, it hoped to fill a hole in online platforms for professionals and styling enthusiasts. As the company releases the third iteration of its app next week, it marks two years of working to solidify itself as an industry mainstay, a pursuit in which it has in many ways succeeded. Everyday users know Bangstyle for its wealth of imagery of cuts and updos, and it has been touted as a replacement for the tradition of bringing a torn-out magazine photo to the hair salon. At its core, though, Bangstyle was designed to solve an industry-wide visibility problem by giving professionals a much-needed portfolio platform from which to publicize their work. Founder Geoff Nelson said he was seeing great work from stylists prior to creating Bangstyle, but they weren’t uploading it because they either didn’t have websites or did have ones that were difficult for them to manage technically. Bangstyle does that and then projects stylists’ work to potential clients nationwide. Next week’s app updates include more search filters, new photo editing capabilities, curated hair collections updated daily, and a “Stalk” function, the equivalent of “following” on any other social media site. Nothing groundbreaking, but necessary improvements if Bangstyle wants to remain #1 in the online hair universe. The app is intended for hair artists on every level, from editorial stylists to those working in salons. It found a key user base in beauty schools, because students are simultaneously looking for work to emulate and need an avenue to find jobs while self-promoting. In professional salons, stylists pull up their Bangstyle profiles so clients can pick a look from their range of work. The people who are most active are, of course, those who take themselves seriously as a personal brand. Bangstyle is currently seeing 400-500K monthly actives, with mobile composing 70% of total user interactions. Nelson estimated that professionals make up about 60% of the user base and are averaging between 20 and 30 uploads each. Nelson has worked hard to make Bangstyle a community destination by feeding into the culture of hairdressing. Because he views hair stylists as artists in essence, rather than trade workers, Bangstyle includes the kind of lifestyle content that would inspire their work. Pin-worthy subjects like food, fashion, photography, and architecture play prominently on the site in articles and images. Bangstyle

Classic Shell now makes Internet Explorer 9 look like IE8

classic shell make windows 7 look like xp
If you used Windows XP for a long time (who didn't?), one of the biggest changes when moving to Windows 7 or Vista was the massively-altered Explorer. While the new Explorer introduces some useful new features, it also removed just as many -- which is where Classic Shell comes in!

We've covered Classic Shell before, but here's the crib note: Classic Shell restores almost every Windows XP-era Explorer feature. The best change, in our opinion, is the reemergence of the 'up' arrow, meaning you now navigate without using the Windows Vista/7 'breadcrumbs' address bar. The status bar yet again shows the total size of your selection, and -- praise be! -- the diabolical Windows 7 Copy File 'copy and replace?' dialog has been replaced with a Windows XP lookalike (image after the break).

New to the most recent version of Classic Shell is the ability to make IE9 look like IE8. With Classic Shell the title bar yet again has a caption, so you can see the full title of Web pages. The current security zone and loading progress indicator have been put back into the status bar, too. If you enable 'Show tabs on a separate row,' it's almost like using IE8.

Finally, Classic Shell replaces the omnipotent Windows 7 Start Menu with the age-old 'classic' Windows 2000/XP-style Start Menu. Classic Shell makes the Start Menu skinable, too, if you're into the kind of thing.

As awesome as it sounds, we've only touched on a small section of Classic Shell's feature set. Check the Classic Shell site for a complete list. There's a few more images of Classic Shell in action after the break.

TechMedia Network Buys Bestofmedia Group And Steps Up Content-Commerce Integration

TMN_plus_BOMTechMedia Network, the digital tech and science publisher, announced yesterday that it has acquired Bestofmedia Group for an undisclosed sum, adding three new tech publications to its roster. The acquisition presents an opportunity to leverage TechMedia Network’s commerce functionality with Bestofmedia’s community brands, making clear that TechMedia Network’s definition of digital media is vertical media. I gave Greg Mason, the CEO of TechMedia Network, a call this morning to get some more details on the deal. TechMedia’s e-commerce site TopTenREVIEWS currently drives 1 million purchases per month, a rate it hopes to see jump when sales are integrated with Bestofmedia’s sites, Tom’s Hardware, Tom’s Guide, and Tom’s IT Pro. The goal is to nestle content, advertising, community, and purchase recommendations into one money-making user experience. The question is how to convert Tom’s readers to sale. Pairing content with commerce on a site like TopTenREVIEWS, when the reader is already looking to make a purchase, is much easier than moving a user from content to purchase when they aren’t necessarily in the mindset to buy. TechMedia Network’s solution is pretty simple: use TopTenREVIEWS. The Tom’s sites currently engage in commerce to the extent of linking through to merchants. Mason said the newly acquired sites would likely have more direct linkage from product reviews and feature stories to TopTenREVIEWS’ review platform, which is already effective at converting consumers to sale. The thinking is that if you’re reading an article on identity theft, you might be interested to take steps to protect your identity. That’s where they link you through to TopTenREVIEWS. Because tech news is inherently product-based, this plan stands a better chance than it would on many other news sites. But that is assuming that a person reading a feature story will convert to a purchase mindset simply by entering the TopTenREVIEWS environment. Moving forward, TechMedia Network is looking to get into the UK market, Mason said. Bestofmedia has a European center of gravity but has little presence in the UK; TechMedia Network has none there. They also plan to develop the editorial staff and content for Tom’s Guide and Tom’s IT Pro, as Tom’s Hardware is currently Bestofmedia’s primary traffic driver. Mason wouldn’t give numbers, but he said that both TechMedia Network and Bestofmedia are profitable. Aside from ad and commerce revenue, TechMedia syndicates its content to media sites including Yahoo, TechCrunch’s parent company AOL, MSNBC, and FOX. As a

Balance is a challenging mouse-based physics game

balance
Years of computer use have taught us that the mouse cursor is "above" the windows. It doesn't push anything around; at least not without you clicking anything.

Balance takes that ingrained bit of knowledge and cancels it out. Suddenly your cursor (a blue dot) is solid - and if it touches the blue block, it pushes it around.

Your job is to use your cursor to nudge the blue block over to the orange block. You will have to push it, lift it and even flip it on its side, and then balance it. It's a very tricky game - one I wouldn't recommend tackling with a laptop trackpad.

Still, if you have a mouse and a hankering for a little physics gameplay, this is a cute little game. I like how the blue block never stops smiling, it makes me feel better about the world.

Windows 8 welcome screen revealed, looks very Metro

windows 8 welcome screen
It's not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7's Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven't seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we've now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we're wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you'll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen -- as you can on current Android devices.

Bing adds licensing rights refinement to image search

Image

Here's a nice little feature for those of us who love to post images on the internet. Bing has added the ability to refine image results by license. The addition's simple enough to use -- just do a search and pull the appropriate license from a drop down on the top of the results page, alongside options for date, size and color. Selections include public domain and options like "free to modify, share and use," based on the Creative Commons licensing system, so there's no doubt as to precisely how you can incorporate them into your own posts. Google's had a similar option on its own search engine for some time -- albeit one's that's a bit less prominently displayed.

Gladinet maps Amazon Cloud Drive to your Windows desktop

amazon cloud drive
Amazon's recently-introduced Cloud Drive is a great place to store your files online. It offers 5 gigs of totally free space, and U.S. users also get access to the handy Cloud Player app (for Web and Android!) which streams music you upload to your Cloud Drive.

The service could be a little easier to use, however. Until Amazon releases a desktop client, Windows users might want to take another look at Gladinet. The multi-service cloud connector has now added Amazon Cloud Drive support and will let you map a network drive letter to your account with minimal fuss.

Once you've added your credentials to Gladinet, just pick the letter you want to assign to the drive and you're good to go. You can then copy files to and from your Cloud Drive, rename items, and manage folders like you would any local hard drive in your system.

The only downside is that the free version of Gladinet gives you a limited number of cloud interactions. Once you use those up, you'll need to upgrade to the paid version, which costs $49.99. If you work with a number of cloud-based storage providers, however, it could be well worth the price tag.

Skype 4.0 for Android: Same Skype, Totally New App

Skype 4.0 for Android: Same Skype, Totally New App After announcing today's 100 million Android-download milestone, Skype celebrated the occasion with a totally overhauled, refreshed Android app that's supposed to "make your interactions easier and put conversations first." And with a cleaner, lighter, and lightening fast UI, it may just live up to its promise.

What does it do?

It's Skype, but stripped of all the extra crap that seemed to choke the old incarnations. You'll get three separate tabs, the first of which shows you all recent conversations, followed by your contacts, followed by your favorites. Small circles similar to Facebook's attempt at the now notorious chatheads carry your contacts profile pictures. You'll also be able to attach files and video messages, one of Skype's newer native app features.

Why do we like it?

While there aren't any major new additions are far as strict function goes, the app does feel like an entirely different breed. It's given in to the Flat design you see practically everywhere these days, but more importantly, its simplified the buttons and divided its screens into digestible, bright tabs that make the app far more pleasant to use. The lack of clutter should also speed things up quite a bit as well as keep it running more smoothly. Plus, intuitive gestures (such as swipe to start a conversation) are a long overdue addition.

The Best: Far more pleasant on the eye and easier to use

The Worst: No major new features
